  • The Australian Government has introduced a suite of reforms focused on the prevention and disruption of domestic terrorist threats in the Counter-Terrorism Legislation Amendment (Foreign Fighters) Act 2014. The reforms will make it an offence for Australians to enter or remain in an area overseas which has been declared by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, in which a listed terrorist organisation is engaging in a hostile activity.
  • The Australian Government is considering creating a new offence of entering, or remaining in, a declared area overseas where listed terrorist organisations are engaging in hostile activities without a legitimate purpose.
  • On 12 September 2014, the Government raised the domestic National Terrorism Public Alert level to High. This represents the assessed risk of terrorist threat within Australia. It does not relate to the risks faced by Australians when travelling overseas, which are covered in the travel advisories on this site. Heightened security arrangements are in place at Australia's international airports.

  • New business travel advice includes information about overseas travel risks that employers and business travellers should consider, and case studies of risk mitigation measures applied for short and long-term overseas travel.
  • The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is inviting public input into the development of a Consular Strategy for the period 2014-16. Public submissions can be made until 31 January 2014.
  • Natalie Hensby, a young Aussie who was pulled unconscious and seriously injured from the water after a horrifying boat crash in Thailand, features in our latest Smartraveller TV ad.   • The Smartraveller iPhone app is now available in the App Store. The app features location aware travel advice updates and access to Smartraveller advice without the need for an internet connection, along with easy repeat travel registration using saved information.
  • Information for dual nationals, travelling seniors and on staying well overseas is now available in seven languages other than English: Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Arabic, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Hindi and Indonesian
  • Did you know that it is illegal to take Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) medicines out of Australia unless the medicine is for your personal use, or the personal use of someone travelling with you? Learn more on our prescription medicines page.

  • The Attorney-General has announced that from 1 February 2012 Australians seeking to enter into a same-sex marriage overseas will be able to apply for a Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage.

  • Take a look at our three new TV ads on YouTube. They highlight the importance of registering your travel plans, reading and subscribing to our travel advice, and taking out comprehensive travel insurance before you leave Australia.
  • Our free online learning for travel agents is now available. The program is designed for travel agents but is available to anyone who would like to learn more about Smartraveller and the consular services provided the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
  • We now feature videos in selected travel advisories filmed by our counsular officers. If you'd like to view all our travel advice videos, take a look at the playlists on our video page. We'll be adding new videos from time to time, so check back soon if you'd like to see more.
